The ad campaign became an issue for several state attorneys general following a spread in the 40th anniversary issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Blumenthal said the nine-page spread in the Nov. 15 issue used cartoons and other "youth-targeted" imagery to promote discount camel, violating a 1998 agreement that included a prohibition on marketing tobacco products to youth.
The 100 SWAT members in Collier County began collecting signatures last month from fellow students, teachers, parents and concerned citizens on post cards that will be sent to executives at five major magazines in protest of buy camel cigarettes No. 9 advertisements. The five magazines are Glamour, Lucky, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Vogue. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. debuted the new cigarette this past January with its black and pink packages, including pink foil inside the package. The cigarette is a take-off of Chanel No. 5 perfume, said Andrew Nichols, an 11th-grader at St. John Neumann High School and SWAT member.
